Lone working and supervising a worker on their own

Lone working means performing tasks out of sight of others. Where the risk lies and how a vision system shortens the time for help to arrive.

Definition

Lone working means performing tasks in a place where the worker stays out of sight and hearing of others. The risk lies not in the incident itself but in the time that passes before anyone notices it.

Where the problem lies

A collapse in an isolated place can go unnoticed for a whole shift. The same incident in a hall full of people ends with help being called within tens of seconds.

This is not limited to night shifts. A maintenance worker checking an installation on a mezzanine, or a storekeeper in a distant aisle, is in the same position in the middle of the day.

Supervision methods and their limits

Wearable devices react to lack of movement and to a lying posture, but they require someone to wear and charge them. An alarm button assumes the casualty can press it.

Vision detection requires nothing on the worker but only works within the camera view. These approaches complement each other and are matched to specific workstations.

Frequently asked questions

Does the law prohibit lone working?

Not in general, though certain particularly dangerous tasks require a standby person. The scope follows from the occupational risk assessment.

Is a vision system enough on its own?

It depends on the workstation. Where regulations require a standby person it is a complement, not a substitute.

What happens after detection?

A notification reaches designated people together with the location of the event, which shortens response time.
