Fall detection and worker collapse

Fall detection recognises a person on the ground who does not get up. How it works, why seconds matter and where the mistakes come from.

Definition

Fall detection is the recognition, from a camera image, of a situation where a person has ended up lying down and does not get up within a set time. The system judges not the moment of the fall but what follows it - a lack of movement over some seconds separates a collapse from crouching.

Why response time matters

When someone collapses in an isolated spot, the first minutes decide the outcome. A worker in a warehouse aisle outside anyone's view can lie there until the end of the shift if nobody walks past.

Vision detection shortens that to seconds, because the camera watches continuously. The value is not the detection itself but summoning help earlier than a passing witness would.

Where mistakes come from

The most common false reports involve work performed lying or half-lying: servicing a machine from below, floor-level installation, cleaning. Without exceptions for such situations the alerts lose credibility.

Falls partly hidden by a rack or a machine can also be missed. That is a limitation of the camera view rather than the model, and it is solved by choosing the observation point, not by changing the algorithm.

Frequently asked questions

Will the system detect a fall in an empty room?

Yes, provided the area is in frame and lit. Single-person workplaces are exactly where this function pays off most.

How long without movement triggers an alert?

It is configured during deployment. Too short and every crouch raises a report; too long and help is delayed.

Does fall detection replace an alarm button?

No. It complements it for the case where the injured person cannot press it.
